Workshop

Workshop Our lyres are constructed mainly from Irish hardwoods, especially Elm and Sycamore, Cherry and Maple - using selected European Spruce for the soundboard and bracing. All our soundboards feature a unique bracing pattern which is handcarved and individually voiced.
All our timber enjoys a full 7 year cycle of seasoning in our air drying shed and a further period of stabilizing in our specially constructed and controlled de-humidifying room. The hardwoods used are selected in relationship to the qualities imbued from their planetary influences, which in turn produces certain tonal qualities essential to the resonance and brightness of the Celtic Lyre. Workshop The unique design and artistic form of the Celtic Lyre was created through inspirations of master luthier Mr Sam Irwin. The "larynx" shaped body gives "voice" to the instrument and the internal soundbox gives the heart and lungs, providing a living, breathing threefoldness to this musical creation.
From the initial selection of the timber, to the final polishing process, we incorporate the skills of many of our "special needs" residents in the manufacture of the Celtic Lyre. The qualities that they bring to the instruments is reflected in their brightness and warmth of tone. Workshop
